UN Lifts Sanctions on Syria's Leader Before White House Visit
Security Council representatives approved to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit next week.
He became provisional head of state subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that drove out the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of internal conflict.
America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a different period" following Assad's ouster.
Previously, he faced global penalties as the leader of the religious organization HTS, once connected to al-Qaeda. America delisted the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups this past July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.
The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the penalties, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and to friendly nations for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday follows US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened for the first time this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria prior to breaking relations back in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
This week's diplomatic engagement is not his initial visit to the US this year. During September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.
During his address, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
