Doris Included in Irish Squad While McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby team selection news

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster forward Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new member in the 34-man squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".

Following facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented the coach, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at full-back.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish pack. The front rower has started a couple of his province's three United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city previously.

McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a cap.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, while experienced Ulster second row Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to deputise for the captain should the skipper does not regain full fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
